Teach students to see, think and work like a mathematician

What is the purpose of school mathematics? In this presentation, Kristen uses this question to shape her advice for teaching mathematics. Participants will explore what this means through the context of a mathematics problem and then learn some strategies to make this a reality in their classroom.

About DrĀ Kristin Tripet

Kristen leads the national program, reSolve: Maths by Inquiry at the Australian Academy Science. With a lifelong interest in mathematics, Kristen has worked as a teacher and as a mathematics education consultant, delivering professional learning and projects to build teachers’ capacity in the teaching of maths from Foundation to Year 10. Kristen in an Executive member of Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) and is a Fellow of the International Society of Design and Development in Education (ISDDE) and serves on their executive committee. She is also involved in state and national reference groups and expert advisory panels in mathematics education.

Kristen has served on numerous national and international advisory boards in mathematics education. She has also been awarded MERGA’s Early Career Research award. Kristen’s research interests lie in how students come to know and understand mathematics, and productive teaching practices that support students to develop deep mathematical understanding.
