Retrieval Practise

PRESENTED BY ZaHRA HARVEY

In this session, Zahra explores the crucial role of retrieval practice in the learning process. She examines the research base supporting it, clearly defines what retrieval practice is - and what it is not - and outlines four high impact strategies for integrating retrieval practise into mathematics classrooms.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the underlying theory and learn how to apply it through practical, evidence-based approaches. The session will highlight resources teachers can draw on to effectively implement retrieval practice, ensuring that participants leave equipped with both the knowledge and tools to add retrieval practice into their teaching.

About Zahra Harvey

Zahra Harvey holds a Master’s in Mathematics Education and Educational Leadership from the University of Melbourne, where her thesis explored the key components of professional learning that drive effective school improvement. Her expertise lies in explicit numeracy instruction, focusing on coherent curriculum sequencing, responsive and adaptive teaching, and implementation of multi-tiered systems of support.

Zahra has presented at conferences across Victoria, including MAV and The Academy’s Numeracy Symposium, sharing her insights on evidence-based practice. She has delivered professional learning through organisations such as Knowledge Society, Fogarty Edvance, the Department of Education, and the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.
