Paul and Narelle focus on basic addition facts and additive thinking.

They explain that fluency with these facts and long term retention is improved when students understand part part whole thinking. While doing these they touch on cognitive load theory, the concrete-representational-abstract approach, and the the link to solving some word questions.

Dr Paul Swan and Narelle Rice collaborate on the development of support materials to help teachers and children with mathematics. Narelle is best known as the hands, voice and brains behind the Bond Blocks Counting and Core addition and subtraction kits.

When not writing, developing and presenting Narelle home schools her Autistic son Josh.

Paul has written many books and resources to support the teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary level. He has taught at primary. secondary and tertiary level having earned his PhD in 2002 for his work on how students make computational choices, that is whether to solve a question mentally, with paper and pencil or with a calculator. He continues to write and present having recently collaborated with Narelle to develop Curriculum Threads and Curriculum Guides to support teachers across Australia.
