New resource: Clickview Place Value Mini Clips

Last year ClickView invited me to create a series of short videos to support teachers in their maths instruction.

If you haven’t heard of ClickView it is an online teaching platform that has educational videos and resources that cover all areas of the curriculum. It is used by over 4500 schools in Australia (!) and here in Victoria it is free for all government schools.

It is a little like Netflix for educational content. You can have a look here.

I jumped at the chance to be involved in this project. The brief involved me developing mini clips for Year 3/4 students in place value (and in multiplication... but today I just want to talk about the place value series).

I was really excited to create some high-quality resources for teachers that aligned with my 6 aspects of place value.

When I go into schools and talk about my PVAT assessment and the 6 aspects of place value, teachers are always very receptive.

But I am aware that to properly support schools in implementing the 6 aspects of place value- they need to have access to great teaching resources.

So, I got to work developing and writing scripts for the miniclips.

It was such a fascinating process seeing 'behind the scenes' as graphics, voiceovers and other technical parts of the miniclips were created. I am very proud of the finished products- I think you will love them!

The miniclips are designed to be shown to your class and to act as a springboard for further exploration of each idea.

Teachers tell me that sometimes they find it hard to know the 'right words' to use when explaining ideas... the miniclips will definitely help!

I created the following mini clips (they are all between 2-3 minutes):

  1. Introduction to the place value system
  2. Reading Large Numbers (using the place value houses analogy)
  3. Writing Large Numbers (using the place value houses analogy)
  4. Rounding Numbers using place value (a strategy based on using the number line)
  5. Multiplying and dividing numbers by multiples of ten (the digits moving)
  6. Renaming numbers (the importance of visualising units within units)
  7. Exploring the 600 Block misconception (a visual representation exploring the base ten 1000 block)
  8. Unpacking Counting Patterns in 5 steps (a step by step procedure for students to follow)

One of the things that I wanted to ensure when I worked on this project was that the content would be available to everyone (not just schools who had access to ClickView). This was something that ClickView were very happy to allow (they were such a great company to work for) and I am excited to share the link with you all here.

This webpage (which will soon be permanently available on my website) hosts all the miniclips and allows you to access them and show them to your class.

For those of you that do have access to ClickView I also developed a set of teaching resources to support each of the videos. Just search ‘Strategic Maths and Place Value’ and the videos and teaching resources will come up!

This week, I know everyone is crazy busy trying to wind up the year, but I encourage you to have a look at the miniclip I embedded into to the top of this blog. It is 2 minutes and 12 seconds... and will hopefully give you a sense of the format and help you remember to come back and include these as you teach place value next year!

Have a great week!
