The AMTOC 2024

numeracy leaders teachers Nov 29, 2023

If you have been reading my emails and blogs over the past couple of years you will know that one of my great passions is bringing maths education research and practice closer together. Sometimes I feel they are living in completely separate worlds! There is the research world. Then there is the teaching and leadership world happening in real time in schools every day. We need more 'cross-pollination'!

The situation is getting better. Definitely. However teachers are super busy and often don't have time to be scouring databases and reading research papers (and paywalls get in the way too!). I see it as one of my key duties as a researcher to do everything in my power to bring the latest and most important findings to teachers and leaders in an easy to digest format, so we can move forward as a profession together.

If you were around in January this year or in January 2022, you may have taken part in one of my 'ideas' to bridge the gap between research and practice. The Australian Maths Teachers Online Conference (AMTOC).

I am very proud to say that over 5000 teachers from across the world registered for the 2023 conference and I had some amazing feedback from participants. My goal for the AMTOC was, and remains, to provide a vehicle for research to travel straight to practitioners.

I am very excited to say that the AMTOC will be taking place again in January 2024!

The format will be the same (no frills, but high quality). In AMTOC 2024 we have a few more presenters and each will share a 30 minute pre-recorded session focusing on a theme that is the inverse of the 2023 theme. This year we will look at:

“An observation in my practice that led to further research…”

We have some new presenters and many who you have seen in previous years returning! I am so grateful for all the presenters for giving up their time to share their knowledge free of charge!!

At the end of each year I ask for participant feedback on the conference.

This year the most common suggestion for improving the conference was for the sessions to be available for a little longer to accommodate the different starting dates across Australia.

So in 2024 you will be able to access all sessions for 4 weeks (one week longer than previous years)… I hope this enables the sessions to be watched by a wider audience.

If you are new the to the AMTOC format...is a completely free and asynchronous (pre-recorded) conference. I don’t want any of the presenters to have to be around in January, and I don't want you to be 'locked into' certain times to watch sessions. We are all on holidays! I have set up the conference website so you can watch the sessions whenever suits you between the 19th of January and the 16th of February.

For that reason, I am currently in the process up the conference website before Christmas and it will be ready to go- on autopilot (almost) in January.

Without further ado, I would like to unveil the flyer and encourage you to sign up for the conference.

Here is the link to register and feel free to share with anyone at your school:

Attending the AMTOC is an amazing way to start the year, and hopefully it makes you feel like we are bringing maths education research and practice one step closer, for the benefit of our students!

Have a great week!
